Post Office
The postal network is very well developed and is connected nation-wide. The post office provides postal services, package delivery services, cash deposits and insurance services. They also offer express international courier services known as EMS, international postal money orders and international wire transfers. Usual hours of operation are 9:00am to 5:00pm from Monday to Friday. Some Central Post offices have extended hours (late night or 24 hours), and are even open on the weekends.
Postcards and letters can be sent by dropping them in red mailboxes located at street crossings or in front of public facilities. Packages can be mailed at your post office counter or at cooperating convenience stores.
Your Hanko will be required in order to receive express mail and registered letters. In case the addressee is not home to receive registered mail, it will be held at the post office for up to 7 days. A redelivery notice will be left in the mailbox and the mail will be redelivered between 5:00 and 9:00pm on the same day, providing that it is a weekday. If the addressee is still not home at the time of redelivery, a nondelivery notice will be left in the mailbox explaining when and where the mail can be picked up. It is also possible to mail in the nondelivery notice specifying the date and time you would like your mail redelivered.
In case you are moving, you can notify the post office of your change of address and all mail will be forwarded to the new address for up to one year.
