Aso-Kuju National Park (Kumamoto, Oita)

Attractions: volcanoes, world's largest caldera

Aso National Park is home to two famous mountains, Mt. Nakadake and Mt.Aso. Mt. Nakadake is the highest mountain in Kyusyu standing at 5870 feet/1,791m. Mt. Aso, located in the center of Kyusyu, possesses one of the world's largest calderas. The diameter of the caldera is 10-15.5 miles/16-25km and the circumference is about 80 miles/128km. Within the caldera there are five volcanic cones which have been formed over recent years. One of these is still active today.

Mt. Nakadake belongs to the Kuju mountain range which is home to other mountains of similar altitude.
