Joshinetsu Kogen National Park boasts a combination of steep mountains, volcanoes, plateaus, vast marshes and lakes. The central part of this park is traversed by steep mountains which include Mt.Asama, a triple stratovolcano, Mt. Tanigawa and Mt. Shirane and extends to the plateaus Shiga, Myoko and Karuizawa. Shiga Kogen, a plateau over 3200ft/1000m is known as the biggest ski resort in the country offering 21 ski sites. This resort is where the XVIII Olympic Winter Games was held in 1998.
This park is also rich in wildlife. Not only is it home to endemic species such as Japanese serows and Japanese Macaques but it is also a natural habitat for the deer, red fox and the endangered Asiatic black bear.
