Shikotsu-Toya National Park (Hokkaido)
Attractions: caldera lakes, volcanos
The Shikotsu-Toya National park, located less than one and a half hours by car from Sapporo, boasts a range of volcanos and caldera lakes among its three separate sections.
Jozankei-onsen (hot spring), a popular health resort, is the largest section of the park. Mt. Yotei (6,211ft/ 1,893m), an extinct volcano, is located west of Jozankei-onsen and has three summit craters. It is about a four-hour climb to the summit of the mountain. A circular crystal lake, called Toya, is located in the southern part of Jozankei-onsen. Mt. Usu, an active volcano that erupted in the year 2000 is located south of this lake.
